Buddy reads with Jamsu are back with one of my 24 in 2024 challenge reads! The Nightmare In Him by Suzanne Wright is the highly anticipated (at least to me and Jamsu) sequel to her Devil’s Cradle series; and I really do be having feelings on this sophomore novel that definitely is a victim of the sophomore blues.

I was really looking forward to this book once I found out that Wright was releasing a sequel. These characters are just a really fun bunch and I love that with this series so far I am able to just escape and be entertained. No complex world building (but kind of?) and the characters are deep enough that they don’t feel like stick figures. With that said, this book really (and I mean really) felt like an exact replica of her Dark In You series just with different magical/paranormal entities.
I didn’t mind this all that much because I really did enjoy the DIY series, but I was bummed that I knew exactly what was going to happen and the reactions of each character because of it. I was looking for something new, but got the same thing in a different case if that makes sense.
Wynter and Cain’s moments were really enjoyable though! I really love that they continued to keep that line of communication open throughout the book even with the secrets standing between them. The mutual respect for each other’s boundaries? Chef kisses.
This one really suffered from the sophomore blues, as I feel like we are building up to a bigger moment in the third book, but we have to get these nitty gritty details out and ironed first. Which, I understand–I just felt like it was missing something more the entire time.
