Things are heating up in this week’s Buddy Read Friday review! Jamsu and I finished Opal, the third book by Jennifer L. Armentrout’s famous alien romance series, and even though we had clashing opinions–this book is the start to my alien love story.

No one is like Daemon Black.
When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well… There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.
But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.
After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.
Together we’re stronger… and they know it.
“You really shouldn’t trust a soul in this game. Not when everyone has something to gain or lose.”
Opal takes off right where Onyx ended. Shit has proverbially hit the fan, and Daemon and Katy are trying to collect the pieces all the while attempting to navigate a normal teenage relationship. But old friends come back with more troubles than before, and now there is something new that Katy and Daemon must climb over.
Honestly, this book is the catalyst to what solidified my love for the alien romance subgenre. Everything begins to pick up towards the end of Opal and its the slow burn thats not really a slow burn. I loved getting to watch Daemon fall into this role of boyfriend and having to handle protecting those he loves while also learning what true love is all over again. Like in the other books in the series, the chemistry between Katy and Daemon is off the charts and this book definitely packs a punch and delivers in more ways than one as we watch these two goofballs figure out their feelings, where they stand in each other’s lives, and most of all both of them learning who to trust and who to not trust.
I binged this story in one sitting, and honestly wouldn’t mind going over it one more time–I loved it so much. The last hundred or so pages is when the action really sets in and the plot just takes off, but the wait in the earlier pages are so enchanting, it wasn’t hard to stay sucked into the world and their problems. I’m honestly super excited to get to the next book!
