The year is 2023 and I have officially read Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill that Clo at Cuppa Clo has been yelling (lovingly) at me to read for the past three years–honestly it could be longer, but I can’t remember.

But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war–and there will be blood.
“I’m just warning you, I’m probably going to be a total hard-ass vamp.”
Mallory snorted and walked out of the kitchen, calling out, “Yeah, well, you’ve got a purple marshmallow on your chin, hard-ass vamp.”
This was a fun little romp into the vampire world! This very much is an introduction to the entire Chicagoland vampire world and their magic system within it, so any and all character development or pending romances took a back seat in order for things to be explained and figured out; which I read this book via audio mostly, and so I didn’t really mind all that much.
Neill begins her series with Merritt, a human grad school student with her whole life ahead of her and dreams already in arms reach when a terrible accident leaves her a little more dead than alive as a freshly turned vampire. Soon, she finds herself at the middle of vampire politics and the dirty side of the paranormal world she used to just live adjacent to.
I don’t know how to review this story except by saying it was really entertaining. It doesn’t take itself seriously, much like the FMC, and it’s honestly just here for a good time. I really loved the amount of sass and comedic one-liners that Neill brings to the table with most of the cast, but especially with Merritt. That being said, it took a while for things to start progressing and picking up with the storyline and I’m not even sure who our main love interest is at the moment, so I’m in no rush to pick up the second book in the series (though I’m still very much interested to see what happens next).
3 years sounds about right but it could be longer like I don’t remember at this point haha. What’s important is you FINALLY read the book and I can now stop lovingly pestering you about it hehe. Trust me it gets better and it’s such a fun time with each book haha. Book 1 is like my least favourite purely because it’s setting everything up – the further into the series you get the better it is in my humble and totally unbiased opinion xD
