Not going to lie, I didn’t think I was going to like this all that much–but because past Sam had absolutely no self control one day when the series was on sale for 99 pennies, I knew I was going to have to read it eventually. So I was excited when Jamsu told me she was thinking of doing a reread of the series in prep for the release of Gold. Jumping on her band wagon, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I didn’t hate this book!
The story centers around Auren, a royal saddle (concubine) for the gold King Midas, who is considered to be his most treasured and beloved saddle, with the power of turning things to gold, Midas has turned Auren into living and breathing gold. To make sure no one steals her, Midas has Auren live in a gilded cage.
It gives off very much first book in a fantasy series, in the sense that its a lot of information dumping and setting up of the world and characters. Its towards the last thirty percent of the book where things start to pick up and you truly get invested in our FMC and get the gist of what is going on, unfortunately for me that wasn’t enough time for me to feel what I needed to feel with the intended “plot twists”.
The story ends in a way that has me interested to see what happens to Auren and the rest of her entourage as things leave off on a cliff hanger.
