This is the third book in the Horde King of Dakkar series, and this one is such a refresher compared to the others in the series, as ZD interweaves fantastical elements into her overarching storyline and we further get to know and see the other side of the dakkari people; which are not all peaceful nomads I originally thought they were. Our MMC has had a seriously hard life and is considered “mad” because he can see the spirits of those no longer living amongst other things. A brute who gives off major Khal Drogo vibes, he does what he wants and protects his horde fiercely. So it unnerves him when a human female walks into the capital of Dakkar, with a message for the king from their enemy, and she is the only person in a long time to calm him and see who he truly is.
This one was probably the angstiest book so far in the series, but the balance of that was so well done that I didn’t even mind. Our main characters, Darik and Vienne, have gone through ALOT, but the way they were able to work through their problems and actually see and listen to each other made me swoon. Both carry “mystical” gifts that I believe compliment each other so nicely, that I legit screamed at my kindle for them to start banging because they were giving me heart palpitations.
