Becoming Hamilton || NANOWRIMO, My Project, and…resources?
Becoming Hamilton is a new installment/series on Fictionally Sam, where I take the plunge in documenting my journey of writing a novel. New posts every Saturday of November, follow me as I attempt to write like I’m running out of time.
I’m either really determined or hella stupid.
In all honesty, its probably a bit of both but we are going to go with determined as I am here to announce to you that I am participating in National Novel Writing Month (NANOWRIMO)! If you don’t know what NANOWRIMO is, it’s essentially a month long challenge where writers around the world set out to write 50,000 words of a novel in the month of November. That is 50k in 30 days.
I started this series, Becoming Hamilton, as a way to give myself something to look back on after I completed a first draft of a novel, so that I can either pat myself on the back and be like “look what you got through and overcame” or scream “WOW QUEEN I SAW THE TRASH AND RAISED A MONA LISA“. But just like in July, I’m hoping that this journey will land me somewhere in between those two sentiments! Similar to July as well, every Saturday this month I will be posting a check in, where I rehash my week of writing through daily entries that will be filled with my thoughts, frustrations, and comical revelations (and of course my blunt honesty). Like before, I can 100% guarantee that my snarky humor and overwhelming sass will be on full display during this month, because that is simply me staying on brand.
I will also be doing daily updates and snippets of my progress over on my instagram (@Fictionallysam) if you want live footage and glimpses of the progress and hurdles I’m facing! For deeper and more personal updates, I will be giving my patrons over on patreon weekly vlogs and diary-esque check-ins throughout the month. So if you aren’t already a patron, I highly encourage you to waddle over to my patreon and become apart of the Fictionally Sam community!
But with that’s said, I wanted to jump in and announce my project for NANOWRIMO! So grab your popcorn and confetti, and let’s take a gander at my next attempt of becoming Hamilton.
I am slightly being a NANO Rebel this year. I say slightly because I’m not starting a new novel from scratch, but instead working on a previous project…from scratch.
Back in July I started a WIP, I affectionately coined Project Disney, but because of no real direction and lack of development before hand I didn’t get really far into it. But the premise stuck with me throughout August and September, and I decided to see it through in November. So for the past month of October, I’ve been working and prepping this novel to get it in the best place to actually write something that I am comfortable continuing.
Project Disney, is a New Adult contemporary Friends to lovers romance with a splash of Fake Relationship thrown in (Because I’m an absolute slut for that trope). Nothing has changed from July in regards to my lack of ability to make a synopsis, so the above is all I can give you without word vomiting the entire story that is playing out in my head.
I can however tell you that this will definitely be a slow burn romance as those are my favorite types of romances to read, I love the build and watching the characters fall in love in a slow progression.
So I suck at routines currently, which I think is because I haven’t found one that really fits with my personality and schedule. But in my haste to figure out how I was going to get 50k in 30 days, I took NANOWRIMO’s writing routine quiz, and the results actually appealed to me so much that I am going to be attempting to implement them into my routine this month!
Based off my results for the quiz, my writing routine is going to more weekend focused than weekday focus. I work full time as well as am a Stage Manager for a theatre production, so my weekdays are typically booked for the most part. Weekends are my love fest and where the magic will be happening.
Monday – Friday: Two 40 minute sessions (or one 80 minute session) each day with a word count goal of 800 words.
Saturday & Sunday: Two 3 hour sessions (or one 6 hour session) each day with a word count goal of 4,250 words.
Current Sam finds this routine/schedule super doable but who know’s if future Sam will hate me. Only time will tell…
And that is what I have cooking up for the month of November! So tell me storytellers: are you doing NANWRIMO, if so what are you most excited to write in your WIP? If you aren’t doing NANOWRIMO this time around, what is your favorite Hamilton song?
Let me know!
